It was a beautiful fall day last October when I had the privilege of traveling to Houston to photograph the amazing wedding of Erin and Taylor…. I know it’s already February but I got so busy with Christmas things after the wedding that I never had a great chance to take the time to showcase their wedding.
The Ceremony was held at the beautiful down cathedral – Holy Rosary Catholic Church and the reception was at an amazing location just outside the 610 loop – The Gallery – Houston.

A lot of people don’t really think about this until it’s too late so I thought I’d write about some clothing tips.
While I, as a professional photographer, work very hard to make you look your best, you have a very important job in choosing the proper clothing for your portrait. If you are concerned about your size or some other imperfection, improper clothing can ruin your portrait. Even the tiniest, thinnest person can look larger than they are with bare shoulders and no sleeves or a short skirt or shorts. 3/4 to long sleeves will always make you look smaller as well as longer pants or jeans. Another important consideration is the fit of your clothing… clothing that is too snug fitting can over emphasize even the slightest bulge or imperfection…
It’s always a good idea to try on your clothing before your session, keeping all these things in mind.
Proper clothing allows the face to dominate the portrait, with all other elements being secondary. Bare shoulders or tops with “spaghetti straps” often make the subject look heavier and take the eye away from the face… especially bright colors such as red, orange, or pink, will ruin a portrait because their intensity overwhelms the face. Stripes, plaids, checks, and bold prints also draw the eye away from the face and do not photograph well…. unless you’re trying to make a fashion statement… then it’s perfectly fine! Just keep in mind what your ultimate goal is for the session. It’s always good to include some “fun” shots but also include those “timeless” outfits for portraits you intend to display for many years!
Something else to think about in planning your session is your hair and makeup. Don’t try a new hairstyle just for your session, and have your hair cut around a week before your session is scheduled. Makeup can affect the way your portrait looks. While both fresh, natural makeup or “evening” makeup photograph well, stay away from glittery makeup or eyeshadow. This creates a problem with glare and can even show up as blemishes in your portraits.
You’ll also want to be careful about sunburn and tan lines… while these issues can be taken care of with retouching, it can get very costly.
And for the guys… a fresh shave is a MUST. If you have a beard or mustache, make sure it is trimmed to your liking.

The old saying “you get what you pay for” is relentlessly repeated for a reason – it’s true. Professional photographers are just that – professionals.
Consider this example: A pair of scissors at your local drugstore is just a few dollars. You can choose to cut and style your hair yourself. However, almost everyone will agree that your hair will look much better if you hire a professional stylist. This example rings true with professional photography. Consider the amount of time and effort involved in a photo shoot. It is estimated that a photographer spends six to eight hours with a client before ever snapping a picture. Besides the initial consultation to determine your goals, a photographer spends many hours preparing a shoot location, editing and cropping your images and reviewing proofs.
A quote from an article I link to below as it relates specifically to babies, “During the actual shoot, your baby photographer will know exactly how to pose your baby to get the most adorable or poignant shots. Plus, professional baby photographers and their assistants are very experienced in ensuring your baby stays comfortable and happy during the session. They often become close friends who play an integral role in documenting family history and they offer skills that non-professionals simply do not have. There is so much more to creating photographic art then pushing a camera button and sending a photo off to be printed or handing you a cd of images and expecting you to know what to do with it. Professional quality takes time and expertise. The investment is worth it when you find the right photographic artist for your family’s goals. Plus, the end result is a cherished portrait that you and your family will value for many decades, and who can put a price on family heritage?”

Leslie and Gary are getting married in August in Magolia, Texas on a Friday evening which will be a little change of pace for me from the normal Saturday weddings. I can’t wait to see what a beautiful bride she will be… and Gary will be a handsome groom too! We had a great time shooting this engagement session even if the wine spilled and they didn’t even get to drink it! Oh well….
